Miraculously, the first to show up were from Barneys, the influential New York department store. They placed an order from each on the spot. The rest of the industry took their cues from Barneys and by 1987 journalists from Women’s Wear Daily and i-D were visiting Antwerp to report on this new exciting fashion cohort. They found the Flemish names they were encountering hard to pronounce and, as one apocryphal story goes, one of the group blurted out “Just call us the Antwerp Six”.
