Fifteen minutes by car from the city center, down a long driveway flanked by sun-bleached palm trees and rows of prickly pear cactuses, the 18th-century mansion shares some of the formality and dramatic flourishes of Palma’s courtly palaces. Up the wide stone staircase that leads from a vaulted courtyard beneath the house’s planta noble, through double-height coffered and gilt-studded pine doors, is a cavernous reception hall. Larger-than-life portraits of knights, clergymen, feudal landowners and other noblemen peer down on visitors. Empty high-backed chairs line the wall as if in anticipation of a guest of honor. Despite the room’s sober décor, there’s a lightness and relative ease that comes with the countryside setting: Here and throughout the house one finds a spartan palette and a rustic feeling in the form of plain stone floors, bare whitewashed walls and expansive openings that let in the outdoors.
